"Strath" means a valley and the village (pop. 1,469 at the 2001 census) is in the valley of the river Peffery.  The valley once contained only a scatter of farms and the village of Strathpeffer sprang to life in Victorian times after a Dr. Morrison from Aberdeenshire identified and publicised the curative powers of the local spring waters.  With the strong support of the then Countess of Cromartie, Strathpeffer rapidly became a fashionable resort, the most northerly spa in Europe.  It has remained popular with visitors ever since, as it is an ideal base from which to tour the Highlands.  Because of its spa legacy, it offers a wide choice of visitor accommodation.

Strathpeffer woodcarver Allister Brebner created a series of monumental sculptures, funded by Highland 2007 and depicting aspects of Strathpeffer's history.  The sculptures are shown here outside Allister's studio at the Old Station, Strathpeffer.  They were installed in the Pavilion Gardens in July and attract much attention and admiration.
